Magical Treasure Girl — LÜCY
2024 Second Album : Dance on the Shoreline
Creation ebbs and flows like waves beating with the heart, Her voice glides through the forest, singing. With each breath, each beat, we dance together on the shoreline.
-Nominated for Best New Artist at the 34th Golden Melody Awards and winner of Best New Artist at the 13th Golden Indie Music Awards, LÜCY presents a new concept album after two years of honing her craft. -For the first time, LÜCY takes on the role of producer for multiple tracks, collaborating with talents like Ru Kangyu, Everydaze, J.4αllϵ (‘θ’) ϶r, Canadian singer-songwriter Jaguar Sun, and Weng Guangwei. The album also features vocal performances from JOYCE, Everydaze, and Jaguar Sun. -Expanding her signature Bedroom Pop style, she blends alternative electronic, ambient music, dream folk, and rock, singing in English, Mandarin, Japanese, German, and indigenous languages. This marks a fresh chapter in her maturing artistry. -Golden Melody Award designer Bi Zhanying crafted the aesthetic design, photographer Zhang Jiahui captured the imagery, and fashion designer Juby Chiu and art director Yawong collaborated to create custom crimson floral attire, transforming LÜCY into a mobile forest along the shoreline—a striking visual symbol.
LÜCY, who captivated audiences with her magical Bedroom Pop, made waves across the Asian music scene following the release of her debut single CACTUS in 2021. Her enchanting voice and natural creativity, described as having a “voice kissed by angels,” quickly earned her acclaim. Soon after her debut, she was invited to perform at Spain’s Primavera Sound and embarked on her first overseas tour in Lithuania, Belgium, and other countries. Her self-titled debut album LÜCY sold out its vinyl edition on release day, becoming a must-have for music lovers.
While LÜCY’s debut album captured the journey from opening the door to stepping into the music world, her second concept album Dance on the Shoreline continues this adventure, reflecting her growth over the past two years as she navigated personal and global changes. For LÜCY, the Shoreline is not just a literal coast, but also represents the borders between forests, deserts, oases, even the boundaries between life and death. This serves as a metaphor for the album’s stylistic, collaborative, and linguistic expansions.
LÜCY ventures into new territory, experimenting with electronic sounds and Japanese songwriting for the first time. She collaborates with stellar producers JADE Dudu (Ru Kangyu), Everydaze, J.4αllϵ (‘θ’) ϶r, Jaguar Sun, and Weng Guangwei, and brings in vocal contributions from JOYCE, Everydaze, and Jaguar Sun. LÜCY also steps into the roles of producer and arranger on select tracks, letting go of her previous insistence on preserving her demos’ original form, and instead shaping new versions that reflect her current state of mind. The result is a dynamic, multi-layered auditory journey for her fans.
However, behind the title track Dance on the Shoreline, which marks LÜCY’s new artistic phase, lies a deeply personal story. Two years ago, after releasing her previous album, despite its success and praise, LÜCY found herself in a prolonged period of self-doubt. She questioned whether she should continue creating music, wondering if she could reignite her passion. This song emerged from that struggle, offering her a glimmer of hope and the courage to rise again. It became the foundation of the entire album. “What stays with the listener when the song ends?” LÜCY asks. In these songs, she likens emotions to a river that never stops flowing, using voice and melody to help listeners connect with their own experiences. Each beat ties to the rhythm of their footsteps and heartbeat, ultimately converging deep within, evoking profound thought and intense resonance.
In this album, LÜCY’s musical persona is like an ocean or a forest, filled with tenderness and strength. The album’s cover art portrays her as a moving crimson forest, captured by photographer Zhang Jiahui and conceptualized by Golden Melody Award-winning designer Bi Zhanying. The imagery draws inspiration from the diversity and coexistence of plant life, mirroring LÜCY’s nature-infused style. Known for her unique fashion sense, she dons custom red floral attire designed by Juby Chiu and art director Yawong, weaving together visual and auditory elements. It symbolizes that, no matter where her music begins, it brings the healing energy of nature, reflecting her current state of fearless and free musical expression.
Dance on the Shoreline is not only a reflection of LÜCY’s personal experiences but also centers on her confidence and sensitivity. The album’s production expands her signature Bedroom Pop sound, blending alternative electronic, ambient music, dream folk, and rock, enriched with layered vocal performances. Through magical realism, she gives life to the metaphor of “dancing on the shoreline,” conveying emotions ranging from joy and love to fear, sadness, and pain, ultimately facing death and concluding with the beauty of life.
LÜCY wrote Dance on the Shoreline to give herself courage, and she hopes to share that message with her listeners: “If, like me, you’ve ever wanted to give up on your dreams, I hope that after listening to these songs, you can find hope.” As fans affectionately call her “Auntie Lucy,” it’s as if they’ve known her forever. She hopes her music will accompany them through every phase of their life journey. |
