different from the one you are in now.”

1969년, Alvin Lucier는 빈 방에 앉아

자기 목소리를 녹음하고, 재생하고, 다시 녹음하는 일을 반복했습니다.

말은 점점 사라지고, 끝내 방의 울림만 남았습니다.

공간이 사람의 언어를 자기 식으로 소화하는 데 걸리는 시간,

그리고 반복이 원형을 다른 존재로 바꾸는 방식.

저희는 그 실험을 노트북 안에서 제현했습니다.

방 대신 플러그인, 공기의 공명 대신 알고리즘의 판단.

기타로 시작해

그 음형을 복제하고

그 복제본을 변형했습니다.

변형된 것을 다시 복제하고, 다시 변형했습니다.

하나의 소리는 다음 소리의 재료가 되고,

그 다음 소리는 다시 또 다른 곡의 출발점이 되었습니다.

어떤 트랙은 앞선 곡을 직접 샘플링하고,

어떤 트랙은 형태를 바꾸어 다시 쓰고,

어떤 트랙은 그 사이를 interpolate하며,

또 어떤 트랙은 원형의 바깥으로 extrapolate합니다.

이 EP의 수록곡들은

서로 독립된 결과물이라기보다,

하나의 씨앗이 반복과 변형, 되먹임과 누적을 거치며

계속해서 다른 상태로 이동해 가는 기록에 가깝습니다.

민들레씨 하나가 땅을 떠나

바통처럼 바람에 건네지고,

어딘가의 손에 닿아 체온을 얻고,

압력 속에서 변신하고,

마침내 씨앗이었던 기억 없이 자기 리듬으로 뜁니다.

여섯 곡 전부 같은 씨앗에서 나왔습니다.

매 트랙은 직전 트랙의 iteration입니다.

원형에서 한 겹씩 멀어질 때마다

소리는 더 낯설어지고,

낯설어질수록 이상하게 더 자기 자신에 가까워집니다.

중요한 것은 무엇이 원본이었는가보다,

반복될수록 무엇이 남고 무엇이 바뀌는가에 있습니다.

같은 출발점은 되돌아오지만,

매번 완전히 같은 얼굴로 돌아오지는 않습니다.

Iamsittinginaroomwithmylaptop은

노트북 앞에 앉아 하나의 소리를 오래 붙들고,

그것이 스스로 다른 형태를 획득해 가는 과정을 끝까지 따라간 EP입니다.

반복 속에서 닳아 없어지는 대신,

반복 속에서 오히려 다른 얼굴을 얻는 것들.

이 음반은 그 편차와 잔향, 변형과 누적,

그리고 끝내 자기만의 리듬으로 살아남는 순간들에 대한

저희의 또 하나의 현상록입니다.

“I am sitting in a room
different from the one you are in now.”

In 1969, Alvin Lucier sat in an empty room
and recorded his voice, played it back, and recorded it again.
As the process repeated, the words slowly disappeared,
until only the resonance of the room remained.
A measure of how long it takes for a space
to absorb a person’s language and make it its own,
and of how repetition gradually turns an original into something else.
Plugins in place of a room,
algorithmic judgment in place of acoustic resonance.

A Guitar.

Duplicated the signal.
Modified the duplicate.
Then duplicated the modified version
and altered it again.

One became the material for the next,
and that became the point of departure for another.
Some tracks sample the previous one,
some rewrite it in altered form,
some interpolate the space between,
and others extrapolate beyond the shape of the original.

The tracks on this EP are the documents of a single seed
passing through repetition, transformation, feedback, and accumulation,
continually arriving in different states.

A single dandelion seed leaves the ground.
It is handed over by the wind like a baton,
touches a hand somewhere and takes on warmth,
metamorphosis under pressure,
and eventually begins to pulse in its own rhythm,
with no memory of once having been a seed.

Each track is an iteration of the one before it.
With every layer of distance from the original,
the sound grows stranger,
and the stranger it becomes,
the closer it moves toward itself.

What matters here is not what counts as the original,
but what remains and what changes through repetition.
The same point of departure keeps returning,
but never with exactly the same face.

Iamsittinginaroomwithmylaptop is an EP
about sitting in front of a laptop, holding onto a single sound for a long time,
and following it all the way as it acquires other forms of its own.
Things that do not wear away through repetition,
but instead return from it with another face.

This record is another phenomenon-log from us:
of deviation and residue, transformation and accumulation,
and of the moments that survive long enough
to begin pulsing in a rhythm of their own.
