우리는 모두 감자다. 움푹 패인 곳도, 이상한 못난이 모양도 있다. 하지만 열을 만나고, HONEY와 소금·후추 같은 좋은 친구들이 곁에 있으면, 그 모양 그대로 더 맛있는 무언가가 된다. ‘smashed potato’는 그런 변화의 과정을 유머와 에너지로 담아낸 곡이다. 미끄러지는 그루브 위로 “HONEY! / salt! / pepper!”의 콜아웃이 터지고, “BOOM!”이 찍히는 순간마다 불완전함은 결점이 아니라 개성이 된다.
이 글의 감자처럼 우린 모두 하자품이다. ‘하자’ 라는 단어의 통상적 인식은 좋은 의미가 아니지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 그 하자들 덕에 사람들은 모이고, 서로의 부족한 부분을 채운다. 이를 통해 ‘하자’는 그들만의 매력이 되고, ‘하자’의 극복을 통한 경험들은 때론 즐겁고 행복한 기억을 선사한다.
후렴의 “I’ll be okay, I’ll just be a smashed potato” 는 ‘원래대로’로의 회복이 아니라 ‘달라진 지금’을 긍정하는 선언이다. 망치에 맞고 으깨져도 좋고, 파여도 좋다. 찌그러지고 으깨졌지만, 그래서 멀리 갈 수 있다—그 믿음을 경쾌하게 증명하는 노래다.

| 또 비슷한 이야기를 할 거면서 사랑 노래는 자꾸만 나온다. 사랑이 뻔한 만큼 사랑 노래도 뻔하다. 그런데 그게 어떻단 말인가. 원래 사랑이 그렇다. 뻔할 줄 알았어도 너는 자꾸만 특별하니까. 잠겨 있던 마음마저 떠올라 사랑을 더 알게 되는 날, 남겨진 고백은 노래가 된다. 더이상 불러올 수 없어도 너를 노래한다. 닿지 못하는 내가 자꾸 멀어서 내미는 벅찬 마음이다.
